Logitech G27

Guys I just ordered a logitech G27 and I am looking to order a wheelstandpro if my current mounting situation doesn't work out. I am heaps keen to try this out on GTR2 and stuff doing some serious multiplayer racing of anytype. I am especially keen on the drifting with LFS. I will write a bit of a review of my thoughts on the whole thing and post it up here for the AMDSQUAD forums.

Peace out.

X-T

Re: Logitech G27

Sweet as dude, OCAU did a review of a Virtual Racing Chassis which looks fairly cool, have you seen some of the setups which use real gauges and other cool stuff?

Re: Logitech G27

Wow           ....

What can I say about the G27. I should probably warn you that reading this review may cost you more than you think. The G27 is a finely made steering wheel set from logitech, which consistes of a steering wheel, pedals and a 6 speed H box shifter.

Firstly, the steering wheel looks and feels the part, with 6 buttons on the front face and two paddle shifters behind it, it makes the G27 a real treat when racing formula 1 or just looking for a few extra buttons to push when you are driving such as the horn, ignition or even changing views. The steering wheel feels like you are in control and has unreal force feedback. Infact I had to turn it down as I found it to make games insanely hard to control, but a truly awesome experience. Once I get the hang of it more I will be sure to put it back up to full. smile

The shifter has a race feel to it, though it does feel a little light and lifeless when you first put your hand on it. However once you are immersed in a game it really does bring it to life and you soon become highly involved. The pedals also have a very real feel about them, keeping in mind that they aren't specifically set up for any type of car in particular. The clutch is a truly awesome feature and coupled with the 6 speed transmission it provides a very realistic setup.

Since I didn't have much room for my setup, I had to buy a wheelstandpro and was quite happy to after reading comments on them. And I have to agree that it gives you an unreal experience. I mounted my gear shifter upside down to lower it to a normal height but it has the sense that it "wraps around you". When you are sitting down the steering wheel is at perfect height the gear shifter is perfectly in the right position for your left hand and the pedals are comfortable.

Pros of G27

Steering wheel, pedals and gear shifter all in one pack
Simple setup
Unreal racing experience
Force feedback
Different Racing profiles using the logitech software
proportional inputs from 90 degrees to 900 degrees
Shifting lights on the wheel
6 buttons on the wheel
Paddle shifters
D pad on the shifter along with 8 other buttons
6 speed transmission
Clutch brake and throttle

Cons

It can take up some room, especially with larger mounting rigs
Its kind of expensive @ $600 rrp on logitech website ( I picked mine up for $420!)
Takes a bit of getting used to

Conclusion

The Logitech G27 is what it is, if you want a truly awesome racing experience that is closer to the real thing than any other, I would get it. I would also consider putting some cash aside for a decent mounting setup. An ironing board or a normal desk would not do this justice and would simply be a waste of an experience. I happen to have a 42 inch plasma which I have hooked up and I am very impressed with my experience. I would though in the future like to buy a 50 inch Full HD LED LCD and use that, but that will have to wait for my pc upgrade. smile

I will upload some photos of it once I get home. The setup is seriously unreal. On a personal note, I was happy last night playing LFS driving around a circuit in the low to mid rev range just granny shifting. Its so addictive you just have to try it!

Re: Logitech G27

Sounds awesome as dude, i have been tossing up the idea of getting a g25 or g27. Im still sitting on the fence at the moment, the good thing with the Logitech steering wheels is they also work on the ps3 which is a win for me smile

i am however saving up and buying an asrock ION330 machine and will be setting it up with xbmc to serve all my media so that should be sweet smile

Re: Logitech G27

Oh yeah, that ION330 looks sweet as, argh another thing I want now! tongue

The G25 you can probably pick up cheap on ebay or something. IMHO I think that the G25 has more usable features, but the G27 is very nice still and a bit more quiet. I have to say though having the 6 buttons on the front is very useful after you get the hang of it a bit. I still think they need to put a e brake in.

But more or less G25 or G27, are both wicked awesome. Last night I was suppose to take some pics, I had my brother, his partner and my neighbour over so it was pretty flat stick. It's incredible but the G27 must really be hard. Usually my bro is pretty good at hand eye co-ordination stuff, but he couldn't keep it on the road at all even after an hour. I will have to send you some drift movies.

In terms of games, so far I have been playing LFS (80%) and GTR (20%). I can't fault LFS, the new version of S2 is just perfect.

I know the cabling is fairly messy and stuff, I will be bringing home some stuff to tidy it all up. All in all its the best setup I have played on so far, Ideally, A newer computer and a full HD tv would be sweet as my HD tv seams to get a bit blurry in the middle section even with full AA and AF on. I guess 1024 X 768 resolution is just too low tongue.  But yeah sometime in the pipeline I should be getting that. I am hoping to hold out till bull dozer. My current rig is still 775, 8800gts, 3gb of DDR2 (1GB cooked itself) 3 X 1 Terry's, E7500 non OC, 850 antec quattro. All in all I think for its day and age this rig is plotting along nicely still. As much as I hate it, I just can't fault the damn thing!

Atleast upgrade to am3 or i5 smile a nice new shiny SSD and 8gb of ddr3 ram smile

Im planing on getting a 120gb SSD as my 80gb windows drive has been used in all my PC's since 2003-2004 tongue

Re: Logitech G27

LOL Good old 80GB

Yeah I have a decent amount of stuff that I plan to use for cable management, its like velcro ties that you use on cables. I will post that in another section for you all.

Yeah I know, i really hope that my rig can hold out for another 6 months until the new bull dozer platform arrives. Word is that its on another socket and its suppose to be leaps and bounds faster than the current AM3 platform. We will see anyhoooo.

More photos and movies later
